Studio sessions in Beekmantown · In-home sessions within 45 minutes · Siblings and family welcome
Newborn sessions are designed for the window when babies are sleepiest, curliest, and most themselves: the first five to ten days of life. My studio in Beekmantown is set up specifically for newborns. The room runs warm. There is no clock on the wall. Sessions move at your baby's pace and take as long as they take.
Everything revolves around you and your baby. If your baby needs to eat, we stop. If they need a diaper change, we pause. If they need a break and some cuddles from mom and dad, we stop and allow that time. I take cues from your baby throughout. I never push a position if your baby seems uncomfortable. If something is not working, we move on and tries something else.
In-home newborn sessions are a great option for families who want the nursery, their own light, and their own space in the photos. They also work well for families with older kids who are more comfortable at home. I bring everything I need and will work with whatever spaces you are comfortable with: the nursery, the primary bedroom, the living room, and more. These sessions allow your images to be uniquely yours.
I travel at no extra charge within 45 minutes of the studio, which covers most of the Plattsburgh area and the greater North Country.
The studio is in Beekmantown, NY, just outside Plattsburgh. It is set up specifically for portrait work and runs warm for newborns. The space is quiet and tucked away from the busy streets, with everything you need already there: props and wraps for baby, a private bathroom, off-street parking, and easy access. The studio has never been rented out to another photographer. When you arrive, the whole space is yours.
Studio sessions give me the most control over lighting and allow me to use her full newborn closet, props, and wraps. If you have a specific look in mind, the studio is usually the best place to achieve it.
BEST AGE: 5 TO 10 DAYS
Ideally, baby should be between 5 and 10 days old. This is when they are sleepiest and most naturally curled, which is what makes newborn photos distinctive. But don't worry if you miss that window: I can work with older babies, too. If your baby is more alert and less sleepy, I will adjust the approach: more awake poses, more connection with mom and dad, more true-to-life moments.
BOOK AFTER YOUR FIRST TRIMESTER
Once you are out of your first trimester is the perfect time to book. We pencil in a tentative date around your due date and keep time available around it. Once baby arrives, you reach out and together we set a definite date and time that works for your family. The session fee is due at the time of booking along with a signed contract.
SESSIONS RUN 2 TO 3 HOURS
Plan for a longer session. Newborn sessions vary in length depending on your baby, but two to three hours is typical. There is time built in for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and anything else that comes up. Fussy stretches are completely normal. The session is not finished until you have the photos you want. No one is watching the clock.
WHAT TO BRING
Make sure baby is well fed before you arrive. Bring diapers, wipes, a pacifier if your baby uses one, and anything special you want to include in the session. I will send over a style guide and a what-to-expect guide before your session. Aim to have clothing and wardrobe decisions made before you give birth so you are not scrambling in those first days.

Private bathroom. Off-street parking. A fridge stocked with water and juice. The space is quiet and tucked away from the busy streets. Three steps at the entrance — if that impacts your visit, just let me know when you book.
The studio has two separate shooting spaces: a natural light room with soft white curtains and a fully equipped studio with professional strobe lighting and multiple backdrop options. One session can move between both, or stay exactly where it feels right.
The space is never rented out to other photographers. No one else has set up lights here or moved through with a different client. When you arrive, the studio has been cleaned, sanitized, and made ready for you and only you
I have wraps and clothes for baby. If you have anything special you want to include, get that ready. For yourself and siblings, I will send a style guide before your session. Soft neutral tones work best for the family portion: creams, whites, taupes, soft grays.
The client closet includes gowns and wraps for mom at no extra charge, all washed and steamed before your session. Most clients use the closet for at least part of the session and bring one or two personal pieces. If you want to see what is available before your session, ask and I will send photos.
I have been photographing North Country families from my studio in Beekmantown for years. I completed the Newborn Photography Safety 101 Course and Mel Cieslik's precision posing course before photographing my first newborn client. My studio is set up specifically for portrait work and has never been rented out to another photographer. Every session here is mine.
I love shooting newborns because I know from personal experience how fast this phase goes by. Your baby will only be this small for a fleeting moment. Having the ability to freeze this moment in time is precious. You will never get this time back, but I can help you preserve it: how you looked, how you felt, the love between you and your newborn.
Some seasons pass before you realize they have gone. The tiny hands, the way the light falls, the way your partner looks at you both in a quiet moment. These become the images you reach for ten years from now.
Every session is calm, guided, and completely unhurried. You do not need to know what to do with your hands or how to pose. Just show up and I will walk you through everything from there.
Not someday. Not when you feel ready or when the timing is better. Right now, exactly as you are, because this is a beautiful time worth honoring.
Based in Beekmantown, NY, I travel at no extra charge within 45 minutes of my studio, which covers most of the greater Burlington area. For communities a bit further out, I'm always happy to discuss a custom arrangement.
MEL CIESLIK PRECISION POSING COURSE
I have also completed Mel Cieslik's precision posing course. This training covers exact posing techniques for newborns, including how to safely achieve the most detailed and intricate setups with composite photography.
NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SAFETY 101 COURSE
I have completed the Newborn Photography Safety 101 Course, a specialized training program co-created by a newborn photographer and a physical therapist with over 23 years of experience. The course covers safe handling, posing methodology, and studio workflow for newborn sessions. It is one of the most thorough newborn safety programs available and was created specifically to give photographers a medical professional's foundation for working with newborns.
COMPOSITE POSING
Composite posing means the final image is built from two or more frames combined in editing. In each individual frame, baby is fully supported by an adult. The final result looks seamless. This is the technique used for poses like froggy and taco, which cannot be done safely in a single exposure. Katie does not attempt these without the composite approach.
STUDIO SETUP FOR NEWBORNS
The studio runs warm during newborn sessions because babies cannot regulate their own body temperature. Props are sanitized between sessions. Everything in the space is set up with your baby's safety and comfort as the first consideration.
Every pose used in my newborn sessions is either naturally safe or approached using a baby-led method. I take cues from your baby throughout. If they seem uncomfortable, we move on. Nothing is forced.

Ideally between 5 and 10 days after birth. Babies are sleepiest in this window and still curl naturally into the tucked positions that make newborn images distinct. If your baby is older than 10 days, that is okay. I will adjust the session to meet your baby where they are. More alert babies call for more awake poses and connection shots with mom and dad, and those are just as beautiful.

Absolutely. I have taken and completed the Newborn Photography Safety 101 Course, a specialized training program co-created by a newborn photographer and a physical therapist with over 23 years of experience. I have also completed Mel Cieslik's precision posing course and have two children of my own. I follow a baby-led method throughout every session: I take cues from your baby, never putting them in a position that seems uncomfortable, and move on if something is not working.

That is completely normal and not a problem. If your baby needs to eat, you stop. If they need a diaper change or a long cuddle from mom and dad, you stop. The whole session moves around your baby's needs. I have worked with babies who were wide awake the entire time and still delivered galleries that parents were beyond thrilled with. More awake babies just mean more awake poses and more connection moments.

6. When will I get my photos?
Yes. I love including older siblings and do my best to make them feel special during the session, not just an afterthought. Sibling photos typically work best at the start of the session when older kids are fresh. After that, they are welcome to hang out or head out with the other parent while I continue photographing the baby. Just mention when you book that you want sibling photos and I will plan for it.

Your full edited gallery is delivered within two to three weeks of your session date through a private online gallery. Your gallery will include 50 or more images delivered in both color and black and white. Images come watermarked and locked initially; you can choose a select few to purchase or purchase the entire gallery.

Both. Katie travels to Burlington and throughout Chittenden County at no extra charge. Burlington is about 35 minutes from her Plattsburgh studio, well within her free travel radius. If you prefer a private studio session, you make the trip to Plattsburgh. Both options get you the same photographer and the same experience. The choice is entirely yours.

A lot of clients say yes. The Plattsburgh studio is private, which means it has never been rented out to other photographers. No strangers cycling through between sessions. Add the full client closet, natural light and professional strobe setup, private bathroom, and off-street parking, and it ends up feeling like a completely different experience from a shared rental space. That said, if you prefer to stay in Vermont, that works great too.

Pretty much wherever you love. The Burlington waterfront, Shelburne Farms, local parks, your backyard, a trail you walk every week. If it is meaningful to you, it photographs beautifully. During the booking process, Katie will help you pick a spot with good light and enough room to move around.

Yes. In-home sessions work really well for Burlington clients who want something personal and intimate. Your own space, your own light, your own feel. These sessions are especially popular with families who want to include older kids or pets in the photos.

The best time to shoot is between 28 and 36 weeks, when the bump is full and you are still feeling good and comfortable. Katie recommends reaching out around 14 to 20 weeks to lock in your date. Summer and fall Burlington sessions fill up quickly.

5. When should Burlington area clients book their maternity session?
The main thing is that the studio belongs to Katie. She does not rent it out to other photographers. That means you are the only client who has been in that space since the last time it was cleaned and prepped. The setup, the lighting, and the client closet are consistent every single time. No figuring out unfamiliar gear or working around someone else's equipment choices.
