Choosing between a studio or outdoor maternity session is one of the most common questions I receive as an maternity photographer.
And the truth is—there isn’t a “right” answer.
Both studio maternity photography and outdoor maternity sessions offer something beautiful and meaningful. The best choice simply depends on your personality, comfort level, and the vision you have for documenting this season.
At Katie Leavine Photography, my goal is to create a calm, supportive experience—whether we’re in a cozy studio setting or surrounded by the natural beauty of Upstate New York.
Let’s walk through the differences so you can decide what feels most like you.
The Beauty of Studio Maternity Photography
Studio maternity sessions are soft, intimate, and timeless. They create a controlled, peaceful environment where the focus stays entirely on you and your connection to your baby.
A Calm and Comfortable Environment
One of the biggest benefits of a studio maternity session is comfort.
There’s no worrying about weather, wind, or temperature. Everything is predictable and relaxed. This is especially helpful if you’re in the later stages of pregnancy and want an experience that feels physically easy.
Studio sessions allow you to:
- Move at a slower pace
- Take breaks when needed
- Feel completely at ease
The environment feels quiet and intentional—almost like pressing pause on the outside world.
A Clean, Timeless Aesthetic
If you love a clean, airy, and minimal look, studio maternity photography may be the perfect fit.
Soft light, neutral tones, and simple styling create images that feel classic and emotional. These portraits focus on connection, shape, and subtle movement rather than scenery.
They pair beautifully with:
- Newborn studio sessions
- Classic indoor family portraits
- Heirloom albums and wall art
Studio images often feel intimate and refined—designed to stand the test of time.
The Magic of Outdoor Maternity Sessions
Outdoor maternity photography in Upstate New York offers a completely different kind of beauty. It feels organic, romantic, and full of natural movement.
Natural Light and Scenic Backdrops
Upstate New York provides some of the most beautiful seasonal landscapes—rolling fields, soft sunsets, glowing fall foliage, and lush summer greenery.
Outdoor maternity sessions allow us to use:
- Golden sunset light
- Open skies
- Natural textures
- Seasonal colors
There’s something incredibly meaningful about documenting new life surrounded by nature. It often feels symbolic—growth, change, and beauty all at once.
Movement and Emotion
Outdoor sessions tend to feel a little more free-flowing.
There’s room to walk, breathe deeply, laugh, and interact naturally. Wind in your dress, sunlight through your hair, a quiet embrace with your partner—these moments unfold organically.
If you’re drawn to images that feel:
- Romantic
- Warm
- Light-filled
- Emotionally candid
An outdoor pregnancy photoshoot may be exactly what you’re envisioning.
How to Decide Between Studio and Outdoor Maternity Photography
If you’re unsure which to choose, here are a few gentle questions to consider:
What Environment Feels Most Like You?
Do you feel most comfortable in a quiet, controlled indoor space?
Or do you feel energized and peaceful outdoors?
Your comfort matters more than anything. When you feel relaxed, it shows in your images.
What Style Do You Love in Your Home?
Think about the artwork already displayed in your home.
- Do you lean toward clean, minimal, neutral decor? → Studio may complement your space beautifully.
- Do you love warmth, texture, and natural scenery? → Outdoor may blend seamlessly with your style.
Your maternity portraits should feel cohesive with your overall aesthetic.
Can You Combine Both?
Yes—you absolutely can.
Some families choose to incorporate both indoor and outdoor elements into their session, especially if timing and location allow. This creates a beautiful variety while still maintaining a cohesive look.
As your maternity photographer in Upstate NY, I’ll help guide you through what makes the most sense for your vision, comfort, and timeline.
There is no pressure—only thoughtful guidance.
No Matter the Location, the Meaning Is the Same
Whether you choose a studio maternity session or an outdoor pregnancy photoshoot, the heart of the experience remains unchanged.
These images are about:
- Honoring your strength
- Celebrating your connection
- Preserving a fleeting season
- Documenting the beginning of your family’s next chapter
The setting simply becomes the backdrop to your story.
A Gentle Invitation
If you’re trying to decide between studio or outdoor maternity photography in Upstate New York, I’m always happy to talk it through with you.
We can discuss your vision, your comfort level, and the feeling you want your images to carry.
There is no right or wrong choice—only what feels most meaningful to you.
Whenever you’re ready, I would be honored to help you document this beautiful season.
My studio is located in Beekmantown, NY. I travel at no extra charge up to 45 minutes from my studio. I will travel further with a pre-discussed location depending for a flat fee of $75 added to your session fee.
Life happens especially with children! Clients may reschedule their sessions once with 48-72 hour notice. Your non-refundable retainer will be transferred to a new agreed upon date. If a second reschedule occurs then a new retainer will be required.
You should book your maternity session once you are out of your first trimester. The ideal time for maternity photos is usually between 28–34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully round and you’re still feeling comfortable. Every pregnancy is different, though, so we’ll choose a time that feels best for you.
My goal is for you to feel confident, relaxed, and glowing during your session—not rushed or uncomfortable.
Don’t stress—this is something I help you with every step of the way.
Once you’re booked, you’ll receive my style guide with color suggestions, outfit tips, and examples. I’m also always happy to help you choose outfits through text or email.
My goal is for you to feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself.
