There’s something special about walking into a newborn session with a vision.
The soft wraps picked out. The color palette perfectly planned. The gentle, sleepy poses you can already picture in your mind. And then… baby has a different idea. This recent session was the perfect reminder that no two newborn sessions are ever the same and that sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen when you let go of the plan.
A Little Older, A Lot More Curious
This sweet little one came to me just a bit older than the typical “fresh 5–14 days” window. Because little was out of that window he came with bright eyes, stretches, and a whole lot of curiosity about the world. Instead of long, sleepy stretches, we had wide-eyed moments and cluster feeding. Instead of curling into every pose, we had movement, personality, and a posing plan that went right out of the window. And honestly? It was beautiful in a completely different way.
When the Plan Goes Out the Window
I’ll be honest my carefully thought-out plan didn’t quite go the way I envisioned. Before every session I carefully plan out every pose from beginning to end. A seamless workflow that most newborns are more than comfortable with. The poses I had in mind? Not happening.
The sleepy setups? Short-lived. But here is what I have learned with working with newborns…babies always lead the way. The moment you stop trying to fit them into a plan and start working with them instead is when the magic happens.
Following Baby’s Lead
Instead of pushing for poses that weren’t working, I slowed down, took a deep breath and adjusted my plan. I followed their cues.
We leaned into:
- Natural, comfortable positions
- Beautiful eye contact moments
- Soft, simple setups that let their personality shine
And those awake images?
They told a story that sleepy poses never could.
Redefining “Successful”
A “successful” newborn session doesn’t mean checking off every pose on a list. It means your baby is safe and comfortable. We move at their pace. If your baby needs to eat every 15 minutes, we let them! If they are not comfortable in the curled-up poses, we don’t do them. We capture who they truly are in this fleeting state. This session may not have looked like the original plan but it delivered something even better: authenticity.
The Beauty of Flexibility
Every newborn session is a collaboration between me, baby, and a little bit of unpredictability. Whether your little one is sleepy, wide awake, or somewhere in between, I come prepared but I also come flexible. At the end of the day , it’s not about recreating a Pinterest board. It’s about preserving your baby just as they are.
Final Thoughts
This session was such a sweet reminder that perfection isn’t posed. It’s found in the in-between moments. The stretches. The eye contact. The tiny expressions that change in an instant. Sometimes, the sessions that don’t go “as planned” end up being the ones you treasure the most.
If you’re planning a newborn session, whether your baby is just a few days old or a little more awake and alert, know this: there is no “wrong” way for your session to go, there’s only your baby’s way. And that will always be enough.
That’s completely okay. Awake sessions can be just as beautiful and often capture more personality and connection.
Not at all. While sessions are often done earlier, older newborns still create meaningful, unique images.
Absolutely. Eye contact, stretches, and expressions add a different kind of beauty and storytelling to your images.
I follow baby’s cues, adjust posing, and focus on natural, comfortable setups to keep them calm and safe.
Yes. A successful gallery isn’t about poses—it’s about capturing your baby authentically.
