How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

May 27, 2026

If you’re pregnant and just starting to think about maternity photos, there’s one thing I want you to know before anything else: book sooner than you think you need to. Every season I hear from mamas who reach out hoping to schedule a session only to find that their ideal window is already full. . Pregnancy moves faster than it feels like it should and summer and fall in Upstate New York fill up quickly.

The Short Answer: Book Around 14–20 Weeks

Most photographers, myself included, recommend booking your maternity session when you’re between 14 and 20 weeks pregnant. This isn’t when your session will happen. It’s when you reserve your date so the timing works out perfectly when you’re ready to shoot. If you are ready you can view my availability and pricing.

When Should the Session Actually Happen?

The ideal time to photograph your maternity session is between 28 and 36 weeks. At this stage, your bump is full and beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable enough to walk, move, and enjoy the experience. After 36 weeks, many mamas feel more physically limited and babies have a way of arriving on their own schedule.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long to Book

If you reach out at 30 or 32 weeks hoping to get in quickly, there’s a real chance the calendar is full for your window. Summer and fall are especially busy in the Plattsburgh area those golden fields and Lake Champlain views book up months in advance. If you’re due between May and November, I’d strongly encourage reaching out in your second trimester.

Seasonal Availability in Upstate New York

Spring and summer book fast, May through September is peak season in the North Country. Fall is the most in-demand season of all; the foliage and light in the Adirondacks and along Lake Champlain are absolutely stunning, and I fill up early. Winter sessions are available and can be quietly beautiful, with the most flexibility in the calendar. As always I have studio sessions all year round.  If you book a studio session you can have confidence that regardless of the weather you will have a beautiful and timeless session.

How to Hold Your Spot

A signed contract and small retainer officially reserve your session date. Until those are in place, dates remain open to other clients. Reaching out early doesn’t lock you in to anything — it simply opens the conversation and gives us time to plan without pressure.

Want to check my availability? Reach out today — I’d love to hold your spot.

What if I’m already past 36 weeks?

Reach out anyway. I occasionally have cancellations or openings, and I’ll always do my best to see if we can make something work. I just want to be honest about availability so there are no surprises.

Do you require a deposit to hold my date?

Yes — a small retainer and signed contract officially secure your session date. Everything is handled digitally, so the process is quick and easy.

Can I reschedule if something comes up during pregnancy?

Absolutely. Life — and pregnancy — is unpredictable. Clients may reschedule once with 48–72 hours’ notice at no penalty. Your retainer transfers to the new date.

What if my due date changes?

Just let me know as soon as possible and we’ll adjust together. I want your session to happen at the right time for your pregnancy and your body, and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
