Newborn Photography Session Guide | Katie Leavine Photography

August 13, 2025

Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, capturing those early days of your newborn’s life is one of the most special ways to preserve memories you’ll treasure forever.

Newborn sessions can feel exciting, but also a little overwhelming. This guide will walk you through every step of the process so you know exactly what to expect and can feel calm, prepared, and confident on your session day.

Booking Your Newborn Photography Session

Timing is everything when it comes to newborn photography. The best sessions happen within the first two weeks after your baby’s birth, when your little one is sleepy, flexible, and easy to pose in those cozy, curled-up positions.

Schedule Early for a Stress-Free Experience

  • Book your session while you’re still pregnant and select a tentative date around your due date.
  • Before the session, we’ll schedule a consultation to discuss details, answer any questions, and review any special requests you may have.
  • Planning ahead ensures you feel prepared and relaxed, knowing every detail is covered.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session Day

Newborn sessions can last 2 hours or more, depending on your baby’s needs. Here’s how to feel ready and comfortable for your session:

Feeding Your Baby

A well-fed baby is a calm and sleepy baby, which helps create those cozy, peaceful images.

Don’t worry—there will be plenty of time for “top-off” feedings during the session as needed.

Diaper Changes

Babies are unpredictable, and diaper changes are a normal part of the session.

We’ll always make sure your little one is dry, comfortable, and happy throughout the shoot.

Posing and Maintaining Warmth

Safety and comfort are always the top priorities.

Gentle movements and soothing techniques will help your baby get into safe, comfortable poses that photograph beautifully.

Babies are used to 98.6° temperatures, so your session space will be kept warm.

Dress in layers so you can stay comfortable while ensuring your baby stays cozy.

Including Siblings in Your Newborn Photos

If your baby has siblings you’d like included in your images:

Tips for a Smooth Family Session

  • Sibling photos are usually done after capturing solo shots of your newborn.
  • Minimal handling ensures baby stays safe and comfortable.
  • Bring snacks, drinks, or quiet activities for older siblings to keep them happy and engaged.

Capturing these moments allows for meaningful family portraits while keeping the focus on your newborn’s comfort.

Editing and Delivering Your Newborn Photos

After your session, your images are carefully edited to highlight soft light, natural tones, and timeless style.

What to Expect From Your Gallery

Your completed gallery will be delivered within 2–3 weeks.

Depending on your package, you’ll have the option to download high-resolution files.

I’ll also guide you if you’d like prints, albums, or wall art to preserve your memories for years to come.

What the Experience Feels Like

My goal is for your newborn session to feel relaxing, enjoyable, and stress-free.

Relax, Enjoy, and Trust the Process

  • Every session is tailored to your family’s needs.
  • Your comfort—and your baby’s safety—is always the top priority.
  • The resulting images will be timeless, intimate, and full of the love and connection you share as a family.

Newborn photography is an investment in memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime. My goal is to ensure both your experience and your photos are something you’ll treasure forever.

Is my baby safe during the session?

Absolutely. Your baby’s safety and comfort are always my top priority.
I’m trained in newborn posing and follow gentle, natural techniques. I never force a pose, and I work entirely around your baby’s needs—feeding, soothing, cuddling, and breaks are always welcome.
If baby needs extra time, we take it. There is never a rush.

How long does a newborn session last?

Newborn sessions are typically 2–3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggles.
This relaxed pace helps keep both you and your baby comfortable and stress-free. You can simply sit back, rest, and enjoy watching me work.

What if my baby is fussy or won’t sleep?

This is completely normal—and nothing to worry about.
I’ve worked with hundreds of babies, and I’ve seen it all. Some sleep the entire time, some need extra cuddles, and some prefer to stay wide awake.
No matter what, we’ll create beautiful images that reflect your baby exactly as they are.

Can parents and siblings be included?

Yes, absolutely. I encourage parents and siblings to be part of newborn sessions.
These early family moments are so meaningful, and I love capturing the connection between you and your newest little love.
