What to Wear for Newborn Photos: Outfit Tips for a Timeless Session

August 13, 2025

Deciding what to wear for your newborn photography session can be a daunting task, but with a few simple guidelines you can create a look that is timeless.  With these guidelines you can be sure to have beautiful images that you can cherish forever.

Avoid Matchy-Matchy Outfits

Choosing Colors for Your Newborn Session

  • Neutral tones such as whites, creams, and grays are classic and photograph beautifully.
  • Soft pops of color, like sage green or rust, add interest without overwhelming the image.
  • Muted, calming shades help create a serene and cozy environment for your baby.

The goal is a cohesive, harmonious look rather than identical outfits.

Prioritize Comfort for Your Newborn Session

Best Fabrics and Fits

Avoid restrictive clothing that could make feeding or holding your baby difficult.

Keep It Simple

Simple clothing ensures the focus stays on your family and your newborn, not on busy patterns or logos.

Clothing to Avoid

Busy patterns or bold prints

Logos or branded designs

Heavy textures that distract from the scene

Clothing That Works Best

  • Solid colors
  • Subtle textures or soft patterns
  • Timeless, classic pieces

The simpler the outfit, the more timeless your photos will feel.

Dressing Your Newborn for the Session

Newborns often wear minimal clothing during sessions—such as diaper covers, swaddles, or wraps—which I provide to ensure comfort.

Tips for Baby’s Outfits

  • Choose soft, comfortable fabrics that are easy to remove.
  • Stick to your color palette to create a cohesive family look.
  • Bring one or two special outfits if desired, but prioritize comfort and ease.

The goal is to keep baby sleepy, cozy, and comfortable so we can capture calm, beautiful images.

Final Tips for Timeless Newborn Photography Outfits

With these guidelines, your newborn session will focus on the connection, love, and joy between your family—creating photographs that will be treasured for a lifetime.

When should I book my newborn session?

Newborn sessions are best booked during your pregnancy, ideally in your second trimester. This allows me to reserve space around your due date and ensure I’m available once your little one arrives.  Once baby is here, you’ll simply let me know, and  we’ll finalize your session date.

When is the best time to photograph my newborn?

Newborn sessions are typically done when baby is 5–14 days old, when they’re still very sleepy and curl easily into those sweet, natural poses.
That said, beautiful images can still be created outside of this window. If life gets busy (and it will!), I’ll guide you through the best option for your family.

Do you provide outfits, wraps, and props?

Yes, I provide a carefully curated collection of wraps, headbands, blankets, and simple props for newborn sessions, as well as select maternity gowns for expecting mothers.
My style is soft, timeless, and baby-focused—nothing trendy or overwhelming. I also love incorporating meaningful items from home if you’d like.
